MURPHY PAKIAM NEW ARCHBISHOP OF KUALA LUMPUR
Accepting responsibility for the Archdiocese
Archbishop Emeritus Anthony Soter Fernandez presented the crozier to his successor, Archbishop Murphy Pakiam with these words: “May the Lord sustain you as you endeavour to watch over the flock of this Archdiocese, to which the Spirit has assigned you as Archbishop to serve the Church of God.”
Kuala Lumpur: The former Auxiliary Bishop Murphy Nicholas Pakiam was installed as the third Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur on the Feast of the Ascension May 29 at the Cathedral of St John. He succeeds 71-year old Archbishop Anthony Soter Fernandez, who resigned on May 24 due to ill health. Archbishop Pakiam, as he will be known from now on, was born in Tapah, Perak on the feast of the popular saint of children, St. Nicholas on December 6, 1938. He has been a priest for forty years and a bishop for seven and a half years. The number seven signifies perfection in the world-view of biblical language and culture. In the biblical sense, Archbishop Pakiam has been prepared to assume the leadership, by God’s grace, in one of most the important dioceses in Malaysia.
Being in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city, he will be called upon to liaise with the Government and work closely with other religious leaders of the country. This demands that he act with tact and speed in certain matters pertaining to the Church and State. He has been known to be very articulate in expressing his views, which will stand him in good stead in his new role. His ever-ready smile and the ability to hold a conversation will give him added mileage in the administration of the multilingual and multicultural diocese.
The people of God of the Archdiocese welcome the Archbishop in his new responsibility as the Shepherd of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur.
